What is Rogaine
Rogaine for Men and Rogaine for Women are hair regrowth formulas for men and women suffering from thinning hair. Both male and female users have reported experiencing stabilised hair loss and hair regrowth while using the product.
Rogaine for Men is available in two formula strengths; 5% and 2%, which indicate the amount of minoxidil they contain. Currently, Rogaine for Women is only available in the 2% strength.
How does Rogaine work
Minoxidil is the active ingredient in Rogaine that is responsible for reversing the signs of hair loss. It makes the follicles wider in the applied area and this in turn reinvigorates shrunken hair follicles to make them larger and over time it helps to regrow thicker looking hair.
Clinical Evidence
Clinical studies have been conducted which indicate that minoxidil is effective for hair loss in both the vertex area and the frontal areas of the scalp.

After a 48 week clinical study was conducted, improvements were observed in the vertex area of the scalp in 51% of men using a 5% strength of Rogaine, while the same was observed in 42% of men using the 2% strength of Rogaine.

Moderate to high increases in hair growth were also noted in the frontal area of the scalp in 19% of those men using the 5% strength of Rogaine, while this was also apparent in 10% of those using the 2% strength.
FDA Approval
Rogaine is one of only two medications that have been approved by the FDA to treat genetic hair loss. The other being finasteride (Propecia) which is for men only and may have adverse side effects associated with its use. Rogaine is also the first FDA-approved topical brand that is proven to regrow hair.
The FDA is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a body which regulates a range of products including pharmaceuticals and is responsible for protecting and promoting public health. The FDA have given Rogaine approval to be used to treat baldness.
Using Rogaine
In terms of application, users generally find it easy to apply. You simply rub the liquid into the thinning areas and then after a few minutes you can style your hair as you normally would. You are required to apply it twice a day, and you need to continue use in order to maintain the effect. Some users have mentioned only using it once a day, but we strongly suggest you follow the instructions on the product packaging.
Users have mentioned it is best to rub it in quickly when applied to prevent it from dripping. Some men prefer using the new foam version of Rogaine called Rogaine Foam as it is easier to apply in this regard.
Rogaine side effects for Women and Men
As with all medicines, there are some possible Rogaine side effects. However, these are typically mild in nature and don’t affect everyone. Users most commonly report experiencing Rogaine side effects in the form of a dry and itchy scalp while using the product. In most cases this doesn’t stop users from using the product as they feel it is a minor issue given the results they experience while using it. Some users simply use a moisturising shampoo to overcome these Rogaine side effects. Nioxin shampoo is a popular choice amongst consumers as it is great for thin hair.
Rogaine Results
Both male and female users have reported encouraging Rogaine results, and minoxidil in general has had good media exposure supporting its effectiveness.
Users typically report experiencing stabilized hair loss with controlled hair shedding and hair regrowth while using Rogaine. Those that use the 5% version see better and faster Rogaine results. Clinical evidence also supports this notion with 3 out of 5 men reporting hair regrowth after 48 weeks.
The results will vary from individual to individual just like with any other drug and so Rogaine may not work for everyone. The length of time you have been without hair is an important factor and so those that are completely bald are unlikely to see any Rogaine results. It is very important to treat your hair loss in its early stages in order to maximize potential for results.
Rogaine Limitations
While many users of the product have reported good levels of success with its use, it is important to note that hair regrowth is not something that will happen overnight so you really need to be patient while using the product. Users generally report seeing Rogaine results after a few months of use, though some have seen results earlier.
Rogaine Side Effects Review Conclusion
Based on the overwhelming level of positive feedback from users of Rogaine, it definitely is a product that you should consider if you are serious about treating your hair loss. The effectiveness of the product is well known and backed by clinical evidence and it is FDA approved meaning that it is a hair loss product you can trust.

What the Experts say
Expert Rogaine Results Review 1: Dr. DJ Verret (Hair Loss Expert featured on CBS 11 Television and KABB Fox 29)
“For guys there are medications like Minoxidil that men should use when they start to notice the loss so that they can slow or stop it over the long term because unfortunately once you have gotten a lot of loss then you’re looking at a transplant, shaving your head, or some kind of hair replacement system.
Rogaine may regrow hair, but the big thing is it can slow or stop the hair loss, and that is key.
You have to use them for at least 2-3 months to see a result.”
Expert Rogaine Results Review 2: Dr. Alan Bauman (Hair Restoration Physician featured on The Early Show)
“It was the first FDA approved drug for hair loss. It does work, we are talking about prevention here mainly; 70% of guys are going to get a good response from the medication if they use it consistently. Most people give up the preventative treatments before they see the results from them, so you have got to give it months, maybe 6 months if you are looking in the mirror. It takes a lot of time to see results and you have got to be monitoring it carefully.”
